The Fruchthalle – literally, the Fruit Hall – is regarded as Kaiserslautern’s most attractive concert and festival hall in the heart of the inner city. Even from the very start, the striking beauty of this magnificent design by architect August von Voit (1801 – 1870) caused quite a stir. August von Voit had spent time in Florence while studying architecture, and been inspired by the palazzi from the early Florentine Renaissance – and the attractive lines of Kaiserslautern’s Fruchthalle are clearly indebted to the Medici and Strozzi palaces. The foundation stone for the Fruchthalle was laid personally on 13 June 1843 by no less a personage than King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
